Vergina: an archaeological treasure protected by UNESCO
The Polycentric Museum of Aigai is an extraordinary insight into the world of the ancient Macedonians. Located near modern-day Vergina, Aigai was the capital of ancient Macedonia and is where the family of King Philip II of Macedon ruled for more than three centuries. It gathered intellectuals and the elite of the time, becoming a cradle of culture and was where Alexander the Great, Philip II’s son, was crowned before setting out on his legendary empire-building journey across the East.
It is called “polycentric” because it includes several different parts, each with its own focus. The Central Museum Building is a recent addition, housing a wealth of treasures unearthed in the area and packed with historical information. But the most famous part is the Museum of the Royal Tombs, which includes the monumental tomb of Philip II and other family members, rediscovered in the 1970s to international acclaim. Nearby are the remains of the Palace of Aigai, the principal royal residence of the ancient Macedonian kingdom. With elaborate floor mosaics and other impressive architectural and design elements, it was the ultimate symbol of the power and wealth of the Macedonian Empire.

Dion: The sacred city in the foothills of Mount Olympus. The mountain of the Gods & Muses
Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians and famous residence of the Twelve Gods of Greek Mythology, lies on the foothill of Mount Olympus (2.917m), where a sanctuary was founded in the 5th century BC, dedicated to Zeus, the father of all Gods. It was the place where the kings made splendid sacrifices to celebrate the new year of the Macedonian calendar along with purification rites of the army and victory feasts. Inside this incredibly reserved Archaeological Park one can see the remains of residential houses, the baths, the Odeon and a Christian basilica. Outside the walls, you will have the opportunity to see exquisite sanctuaries and the earliest existing theatre in Macedonia. The tour will end with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Dion which hosts important finds and artifacts from Dion and other archaeological sites of Pieria.
After the archaeological visit we will drive to Litochoro for our lunch, a picturesque town located at the foot of Mount Olympus in the Pieria region of northern Greece. Litochoro is surrounded by forests and scenic trails heading to Olympus mountain. The town uniquely combines mountain landscapes with nearby beaches on the Thermaic Gulf, making it a popular destination for both nature lovers and tourists.
