State Conservatory of Thessaloniki & Catholic Church Thessaloniki
State Conservatory of Thessaloniki is the only state conservatory in Greece and one of the city’s most important music institutions, founded in 1914. It is housed in a historic building designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli around 1903 as the former Ottoman Bank. We will be given a guided tour of its collections, including the exhibition of musical manuscripts and artifacts, and it’s collection of musical instruments. After that a short concert will follow.
The Catholic Church of Thessaloniki is located just a few meters away and serves as the center of the city’s small but historic Catholic community. Built in 1899 and designed by the same architect, it reflects the multicultural character of the city at the end of the Ottoman period. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a reminder of Thessaloniki’s diverse religious and cultural heritage. Both are located in the so-called “Frankish Quarter,” which, since the 18th century, has been home to the city’s Catholic residents of Frankish-Levantine descent who settled there. The neighborhood was named after them. Today, it is known for its commercial character and its many entertainment venues.
